BRUNSWICK

U-Haul is putting its adaptive reuse practices to work in transforming the former Arrow Hart electrical equipment plant into a full-service UHaul store for the do-it-yourself mover.

U-Haul Moving & Storage of Arrow Hart at 1 Cressey Road in Brunswick is now offering truck and trailer rentals and moving supplies. U-Haul closed on the property on May 13. The 186,293-square-foot building also will house the U-Haul Company of Maine marketing offices.

“This building sat empty for more than five years,” said Jon Hynes, U-Haul Company of Maine president. “The manufacturing plant had been around for more than 35 years. It’s the largest building in the area, so it’s important it doesn’t become an eyesore.”

The acquisition of the Arrow Hart facility was driven by U-Haul Company’s corporate sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Its adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.

In addition to the fleet of equipment that is now available for the summer moving season, the location will soon offer professional hitch installation, propane, U-Box portable moving and self-storage containers, and more.

“Brunswick is a really close-knit community and we are excited to be here,” Hynes said. “The area is growing fast and our other U-Haul locations just aren’t big enough to keep up with customer demand. This is the perfect opportunity to grow and serve this community well.”
