STANDISH — Top-seeded Saint Joseph’s College (23-5) edged No. 3 Emmanuel College (21-7), 66-62, in the 2016 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women’s Basketball Championship at the Harold Alfond Center on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory, St. Joseph’s earned the GNAC’s automatic qualifier into the 2016 NCAA D-III Women’s Basketball National Tournament.
The Monks put the close game away late as Julia Champagne of Brunswick sank a pair of free throws with 2.3 seconds remaining to ice it.
Leading 62-60, Champagne stepped up on defense, forcing a player-control foul on Emmanuel.
Champagne also dished out five assists in the win.
