BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College men’s ice hockey team used a three-goal opening period to cruise to a 4-1 final over visiting University of Southern Maine on Tuesday evening.

The Polar Bears extended their winning streak to four and climbed to 8-7-3. The Huskies fell to 5-13-1.

Mitch Barrington started the scoring for Bowdoin 3:37 into the opening period, capitalizing on a 5-on-3 power play. Matthew Lison and Chris Wallace worked the puck with Barrington in a triangle on the left side, ending with a slapshot from above the face-off circle.

Matt Rubinoff doubled Bowdoin’s lead just under 10 minutes into the period, burying a top shelf shot off a Wallace rebound on the right. Lison scored 16 seconds later to extend Bowdoin’s lead to 3-0, shoveling the puck past Kyle Shapiro while both were sprawled on the ice.

USM cut into the Polar Bears’ lead just a minute later. Jimmy Currier skated down the right side boards and took a shot on goal that deflected off the glove of Peter Cronin towards the opposite post. Patrick Magliano tracked the loose puck and put it away. Parker Sanderson lined up a onetimer on the move from a crossing pass to the right side, only to see the Cronin absorb the shot late in the final period.
