The Brunswick Masonic Lodge awards a $1,000 grant annually to graduating seniors from both Mt Ararat and Brunswick High Schools. The students are those applicants who have best embodied the Masonic principles of hard work and a positive contribution to their community. This year the selectees were Rebecca Schuman, a senior at Mt. Ararat High School, and Rebecca Bailey, a senior from Brunswick High School.
Rebecca Bailey provided educational leadership to elementary students needing extra assistance, was a member of the InterAct Club participating in volunteer activities both in school and the community and is an officer in the student government. In addition to holding jobs after school Rebecca was chairperson of the Prom Committee and volunteered at school open houses and during air shows at Brunswick Landing.

These grants are awarded each year based on demonstrated community involvement and contribution, are not based on financial need, require that the student have a minimum of a B-plus average, and may be used for any post high school education at an accredited school.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
