BRUNSWICK — Two local masters swimmers, Harpswell native Katrine Alcaide and Brunswick’s David Vail, achieved top national rankings for the 2014-2015 indoor season.
Alcaide won All-American designation for her No. 1 ranking in the 50-yard breaststroke for women 30-34 years, capping an outstanding year of swimming. This is Alcaide’s second straight year as an All- American. She added five more top 10 placings — second in the 50 freestyle, fourth in the 50 butterfly and 100 individual medley, sixth in the 100 free and eighth in the 100 breaststroke.
Vail’s highest ranking was second in the 200 backstroke for men 70-74, where he trailed only former Olympic trials finalist Rich Burns. Vail also placed fifth in the 100 back, sixth in the 500 free, and 10th in the 50 butterfly.
In a separate “Pool Mile” competition — 1,650 yards — sponsored by California’s Tamalpais Masters, Vail placed second in his age group to Ken Frost, another former Olympic trials finalist.
