BATH
West Island Gallery will be open in Bath this summer, starting with a special exhibit for Mildred C. Johnson of Topsham. The opening reception is 4-7 p.m. tonigt as part of Bath’s Art Walk and Trolley Tour. Regular hours in July and August will be 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays, and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
Mildred C. Johnson, an architect, designer and artist, began her career in 1948 when she graduated from the University of Oregon. Later, she moved to the Boston area and taught weaving and design while continuing to paint and work with fiber.
Since 2004, Mildred has lived and worked in Maine, maintaining a studio for many years at Fort Andross in Brunswick. She is well known for her playful assemblages, but also creates modern, light-filled drawings. This exhibit will set up an interplay between the two, giving the viewer a glimpse into the creative mind and spirit of Mildred Johnson — who turns ninety this month.
West Island Gallery is located at 72 Front St., Suite 17, Second Floor, Bath. For more information, please see the gallery website at www.westislandgallery.com or call Susie Westly Wren, the gallery owner, at 371- 9106.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
