Taste Walk set for Sunday

Gorham’s eighth annual Taste Walk will be held 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sunday, May 31.

Members of the public will sample signature dishes at participating Gorham businesses and vote for a winner of the Golden Spoon award. Sebago Brewing Co. won the honor last year.

Gorham Business Exchange sponsors the event this year that helps local teens attend YoungLife summer camp in New York. YoungLife is a nonprofit, non-denominational Christian outreach to high school youth.

Taste Walk participants this year are 91 South, Sebago Brewing, Amato’s, Gorham House of Pizza, University of Southern Maine, Blue Pig Diner, Carters Green Market, iSpoon, Sweet Shoppe and Hannaford.

Maps cost $5 each and can be purchased at Hannaford before the event and also on sale the day of the event outside Baxter Memorial Library.

Dean’s list at Saint Joseph’s

A number of students from Gorham have been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Saint Joseph’s College in Standish.

They are Emily Berrill, Chelsea Black, Morgan Briggs, April Cummings, Thomas Dahlborg, Emily DeLuca, Sophia Dobben, Megan Dunlap, Forrest Genthner, Elizabeth Lavoie, Matthew Leclair, Breanna Longstaff, Sarah MacLeod, Osna Sayed, Rozada Spiers, Erica Staab, Lauren Stiles, and Shayla Wing.

Absentee ballots available

Absentee ballots for Gorham’s school budget validation election on Tuesday, June 9, are available in the office of Jennifer Elliott, town clerk, at Gorham Municipal Center, 75 South St.

School budget 250 years ago

In 1765, Gorham voters appropriated 40 pounds to support its schools, according to the Gorham Historical Society web site.

The pound is an amount in British currency.

U.S. taxpayer debt

The Bureau of the Fiscal Service reported on May 20 that the U.S. public debt was $18,152,377,261,644.63.

Bob Crowley, a retired Gorham High School physics teacher and $1 million “Survivor” winner, last week hosted the local “Survivor” party while cast member Dan Foley of Gorham was in Los Angeles for this season’s final episode of the reality TV series. Foley had been voted off before the finale won by Mike Holloway  of Texas. He was one of three cast members who visited Foley’s viewing party in March.Staff photo by Robert Lowell
