William Cuevas (1-0), making his Double-A debut, was the first Sea Dogs pitcher of the year to go five innings in a start. He allowed one earned run on four hits, and escaped a bases-loaded, nobody out jam in the third inning by allowing just one run on a wild pitch.
Offensively, the Sea Dogs got things going early on. After Mike Miller led off the bottom of the first with a double, Carlos Asuaje followed up with the first Sea Dogs triple of the season to give Portland a 1-0 lead. Jantzen Witte added a sacrifice fly to make it a 2-0 game. Witte had another good night, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs, upping his season total to six RBIs in five games.
Marco Hernandez led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run to make it 3-0, his first homer in Double-A.
Pat Light pitched two scoreless innings and struck out four for Portland, while Kyle Martin pitched the final two innings and picked up his first Double-A save. Sea Dogs pitchers combined to strike out 10 Rock Cats.
The teams were slated to play an 11 a.m. contest today.
