AUGUSTA — Cancer patients, survivors and their families from throughout Maine will gather at the Capitol building to ask lawmakers to support legislation improving quality of life through palliative care, oppose Gov. Paul LePage’s proposed cuts to the state tobacco prevention and control program, and support legislation to accept the federal dollars that have already been set aside to increase access to health coverage to nearly 70,000 low-income Mainers through MaineCare.

The 11 a.m. visit is part of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network’s annual lobby day, which will bring nearly 50 people touched by cancer together to call on the Maine Legislature to make cancer a priority.

This year, more than 8,800 people will be diagnosed with cancer in Maine and an estimated 3,300 will die from the disease.

ACS CAN will also remember the Hon. Paul McGowan with a memorial resolution presented to his family members in honor of the late representative’s efforts in the fight against cancer.
