It wasn’t long after Mindy Bourgeois sold New Beginnings Consignment Boutique on Bow Street in Freeport that she realized she missed being in the business.
Five months later, Bourgeois is the owner of Sweet Repeats at 554 Route 1, between Bucks Naked BBQ and Cuddledown of Maine. Sweet Repeats, which opened this past Monday, offers new and almost-new children’s clothing, as well as maternity wear. Children’s sizes are infant to size 16.
Bourgeois worked in another retail store for a while after selling New Beginnings, but missed the business.
“I like being my own boss,” the Pownal resident said. “I’ve been in consignment for 18 years. Kids’ consignment is a need in the community.” Bourgeois said it took her some time to find the right spot for Sweet Repeats.
“There’s excellent visibility from the highway, and it’s easy to get there from (Interstate 295) exit 20,” she said.
Bourgeois sells 40 percent new products. Sweet Repeats offers books and baby gear, as well as clothing.
“I really try to focus on high quality,” she said. “It all looks new, and it’s displayed nice, and it’s clean.”
Bourgeois said she thinks consignment is a good idea in part because it keeps material out of landfills. Mothers have fun meeting at consignment shops, and the money stays in the community, she said.
People interested in bringing items to the shop can do so during regular store hours, which are Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Those interested also can go to the Sweet Repeats website, sweetrepeatsmaine.com.
Carolyn Krahn, member relations manager for the Greater Freeport Chamber of Commerce, said that Sweet Repeats is a beautiful shop.
“Mindy is a smart businesswoman,” Krahn said. “At New Beginnings, she built up a very successful business before selling it. She had thousands of consignors and many regular clients.”
Bourgeois also gets some help from an enthusiastic family member. Daughter Luciana, 9, loves to go into the shop after school.
“She just told me that this store is her dream come true,” Bourgeois said.
