Soon after snow started falling Saturday morning, multiple crashes along Route 1 required police to close the slippery thoroughfare for about an hour. 

According to a press release issued by Brunswick Police Lt. Tom Garrepy, members of the Brunswick police and fire and rescue departments responded to Route 1 at around 10:25 a.m. for reports of multiple vehicle crashes.

Officers located five crashes, some involving multiple vehicles, on Route 1 southbound along a short stretch just south of Cook’s Corner.

One crash was a rollover involving a 2006 Ford Escape driven by Pamela Morency, 54, of Brunswick. She was transported to Maine Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Due to inclement weather and crashes on both sides of roadway, southbound lanes of Route 1 were closed down for approximately one hour, Garrepy said. Traffic was detoured into Cook’s Corner during the closure. The crashes remain under investigation.

Other crashes were reported on Durham Road and Bath Road. Road crews called out to treat slippery roads. 

Brunswick Police Department has warned people to drive safely. A parking ban in effect in Brunswick from 11 p.m. Saturday until 1 a.m. Sunday.

Sagadahoc County Communications Center has been busy taking reports of crashes around the county, involving vehicles spinning out and traveling too fast for road conditions. There have been crashes in Woolwich, West Bath and a rollover on the Lisbon side of Route 196 in Topsham resulting in minor injuries. 

The National Weather Service in Gray has a winter warning in effect until midnight Saturday for this part of the state. Heavy snow is forecast and snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches, higher amounts at the shore. Snow may be especially heavy during the afternoon and should taper off Saturday evening.
