PORTLAND (BDN) — Answering a call for peaceful vigils in response to a grand jury’s decision not to indict the white police officer who in August fatally shot the unarmed 18-yearold Michael Brown, gatherings took place in Portland and Bangor Tuesday night.
Hundreds of demonstrators in Portland gathered to hear a mix of somber and resolute speeches, with a call from the Rev. Kenneth Lewis to commit to changing a criminal justice system that disproportionately arrests, kills and convicts people of color.
At least 25 demonstrators lined up in front of the Bangor police station on Tuesday night holding up handmade signs reading “Justice is not just for the rich,” “Justice for Ferguson” and “Stop racist profiling,” among other things.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
