BIDDEFORD — The Bowdoin College Polar Bears scored twice in the third period to break open a tight game on their way to a 3-0 victory over the University of New England in non-league men’s ice hockey action Tuesday evening at the Harold Alfond Forum.

The Polar Bears, ranked 11th in the most recent U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) national poll, remained unbeaten at 4-0-1, while the Nor’easters slipped below the .500 mark at 3-4.

Bowdoin struck for the first goal at 14:59 of the opening period off an UNE turnover in its defensive zone. Junior Chris Fenwick came up with the puck behind the Nor’easters’ cage and fed senior Alec Root all alone at the top of the crease for an easy conversion.

The Polar Bears held a slight 10-9 advantage in shots on goal for the frame.

The Nor’easters carried play much of the second period but were unable to tally despite nearly doubling-up (11-6) Bowdoin in shots.

Bowdoin pushed the lead to 2-0 while on the power play early in the final period. Senior co-captain Danny Palumbo collected a loose puck in UNE’s defensive zone and rifled home a wrist shot near post from a tough angle below the left circle.

The Polar Bears added another insurance goal less than two minutes later at 3:04 of the frame when senior Connor Quinn redirected a shot from the point by sophomore Mitch Barrington for his team-leading seventh marker of the year. Senior John McGinnis also assisted on the play.

Senior goaltender Max Fenkell made 24 saves to register his second shutout of the season for Bowdoin, which ended the evening with a 29-24 lead in shots on goal.

Bowdoin will host Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Sidney J. Watson Arena in the first day of the Bowdoin/Colby Face-Off Classic.

Women’s basketball

The University of New England rallied from a late deficit with under four minutes remaining to defeat Bowdoin, 68-64 on Tuesday evening at the Alfond Forum.

The Nor’easters improved to 3-1 on the season, while the Polar Bears fell to 3-2.

UNE was sparked by 21 points off the bench from Alanna Vose, who went 6-for- 10 from 3-point range. Bowdoin was paced by 19 points from Sara Binkhorst and 18 from Shannon Brady.

UNE led 37-31 at halftime after a wild first half in which each team led by as many as 11 points. Bowdoin rallied to take a 47-45 lead on a Lauren Petit trey with 11:20 remaining in the second half. The Polar Bears maintained their lead until 3:07 to play when Meghan Gribbon made a layup and converted a free throw to give the hosts a 56-54 edge.

Lauren Hayden extended UNE’s lead to 59-54 on a 3- pointer with 2:39 to go.

Bowdoin closed the gap to a single possession on three occasions over the closing moments, including following a Binkhorst jumper with six seconds to go. But the Nor’easters converted 6-of-6 from the free-throw line in the final 38 seconds to seal the win.
