TOPSHAM — The Birth Center at Northern Sun will host an open house on Friday, Oct. 24 from 5 to 7 p.m.
The occasion is to mark its accreditation by the Commission for the Accreditation of Birth Centers, a national certification ensuring a high quality of care to pregnant women and their babies. The Birth Center at Northern Sun opened in 2011 and is the only accredited birth center in the state.
Local and state legislators will be in attendance to explore the impact of midwifery care and out-of-hospital birth on the health care system.
The public is also invited to attend to learn more about the midwife model of care and tour the birth center.
The Birth Center at Northern Sun was founded by Dr. Sarah Ackerly, a naturopathic doctor and certified professional midwife. Ackerly has been attending out-of-hospital births in Maine since 1995.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
