BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College women’s volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 win over the University of New England in its home-opener at Morrell Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

The Polar Bears, ranked second in the latest New England Women’s Volleyball Association poll, improved to 5-0 with their 13th consecutive win over the Nor’easters. UNE dropped to 2-3.

Bowdoin jumped ahead early in all three sets in the 25-13, 25- 14, 25-9 victory. Christy Jewett posted a team-best nine kills to go with 13 digs and four aces, while Katie Doherty continued her hot play with seven kills and 15 digs. Dana Williams collected six kills in her debut in Morrell Gymnasium for the Polar Bears, while Quincy Leech dished out 15 assists and put home four aces.

UNE was led by seven kills from Courtney Lambrese. Leah Janelle had six kills and four digs for the Nor’easters, while Nikki Mathewson finished with a team-high 10 digs. Brooke Gibbons had 11 assists in the loss for UNE.

The Polar Bears will return to action this weekend at they travel to Atlanta for the Emory Invitational.

Doherty receives honor

Doherty has been named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week.

Doherty was outstanding last weekend in leading the Polar Bears to a 4-0 record at the season-opening Endicott Invitational. She captured All-Tournament honors as Bowdoin bounced Plymouth State, Roger Williams, New York University and Endicott. Doherty averaged 2.47 kills and 4.20 digs per set and collected 10 service aces over the four matches, and was particularly strong in Bowdoin’s 3-2 win over NYU, posting 15 kills, 29 digs and four blocks.

It is the first NESCAC Player of the Week award for the sophomore, who played in a team-high 29 matches last season, averaging 1.85 kills and 3.1 digs/set.
