The Chamber’s Government Liaison Committee establishes and ensures open and regular communications between government officials at the state and local level and the business community through the Chamber of Commerce. The committee screens public issues for possible Chamber involvement and makes recommendations to the Board of Directors. It keeps the Chamber membership appraised of legislation, laws, ordinances and rulings that might affect them and their businesses. The Southern Midcoast Maine Chamber does not endorse candidates.
However, the committee does host candidate forums and invites candidates to speak before the membership in order to provide information for decision making. The committee has invited the three major candidates for Governor of the State of Maine to speak before the Chamber membership. Independent candidate Eliot Cutler is our guest on Wednesday, September 10, 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. The meeting includes networking followed by a sit down lunch served tableside followed by Mr. Cutler’s presentation. He invites lots of questions for a an interesting discussion. The event takes place at the Brunswick Hotel and Tavern, 4 Noble St., in downtown Brunswick. Reservations are necessary.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
