GORHAM — The University of Southern Maine women’s tennis team opened its 2014 season under new head coach Mike Hill of Topsham with a convincing 9-0 victory over visiting Lyndon State College in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.
The match was the season opener for both squads.
Former Mt. Ararat standout Sarah Hill, who was named the Little East Conference women’s tennis Player of the Week, paced the Huskies from the top of the lineup with a straight-set win over Alexandria Maynard.
Sarah Hill also combined with classmate Molly Gallagher for an 8-0 victory over Maynard and Christina Boyce at first doubles.
“I am proud (Hill) was given this award so early in the year,” said Mike Hill. “It’s a testament to her skills and experience as a player, and foreshadows a solid upcoming season for her at USM.”
The Huskies will host Thomas College on Thursday (4 p.m.) before opening LEC play on Sunday (1 p.m.) against Plymouth State University.
