OLD TOWN (AP) — Old Town Fuel & Fiber says it’s suspending operations indefinitely and furloughing its workforce of about 200.
The company notified workers Wednesday evening. A statement said all workers except those needed for security were being sent home. It said that ownership will focus on “options to secure the long-term viability of the facility.”
The pulp mill blames foreign competition and high wood and energy costs.
The city of Old Town issued a statement thanking the owner of New Yorkbased private equity firm Patriarch Partners for its efforts since buying the mill in 2008. It said the city will work to find a new buyer.
