WEST BATH

Several applications have been received by the West Bath Board of Selectmen for the positions of town administrator and town clerk as the Aug. 25 deadline approaches.

“We’ve had a pretty good turnout for both of the positions,” said Town Administrator Jonathan Davis, noting that he will tentatively be leaving at the end of September.

Former Town Clerk Robert Morris has taken a position at the Regional School Unit 1 administrative office.

Regarding the coinciding departure of a town administrator, clerk and road commissioner, Davis said, “There’s no underlying issues, there were just outside opportunities that happened to have arisen at the same time.”

“They’ve been a great team to work with,” he said of the West Bath selectmen and town office staff, “we’ve all been very supportive of each other.”

Davis has been West Bath’s town administrator for more than two and a half years. Prior to that, he was a program operations manager with Lockheed Martin, a defense contractor and advanced technology company.

The selectmen are conducting the town administrator search, said Davis, and currently have no plans to contract a service to conduct a search or hire an interim administrator.

“Traditionally, the process is done in-house,” said Davis, “which is how the prior administrator and myself were hired.”

The administrator position covers a broad job description, said Davis, with standard requirements, such as an educational or experiential background in public administration, financial management, and a knowledge of municipal operations.

At the May budget Town Meet- ing, residents authorized the expenditure of $47,920 for the administrator position and $37,158 for the clerk/deputy tax collector position.

“We have applicants asking for a range of salaries,” said Davis, “so there will be a decision making process, if (the selectmen) will stick with the amount they’re authorized to expend this year, or go back to the town and see if the town will authorize more.”

Nomination papers for a seat on the three-member Board of Selectmen became available Monday.

Board of Selectmen chairperson Paula Nelson’s term will expire in November. Nelson has served two, three-year terms on the selectboard.

As of Tuesday, Davis said no papers had been taken out yet for the seat. Attempts to reach Nelson by phone Tuesday were unsuccessful.

Valid nomination papers must have at least 25, but no more than 100, signatures from registered West Bath voters, and must be returned to the town clerk by 5 p.m. on Sept. 22 for the Nov. 4 election.
