BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — The Binghamton Mets (52-37) smacked three homers and pounded out 15 hits, taking the series opener from the Portland Sea Dogs (59-30) 11-4 on Monday night at NYSEG Stadium. The Mets had three, 3-run innings, and produced 23 baserunners.

Righty Cory Mazzoni (1-0) tossed five innings in his season debut to earn the win for Binghamton. The righty gave up five hits and three runs.

Southpaw Brian Johnson (7-2) surrendered a career-high seven earned runs over 2.1 innings on eight hits and one homer to suffer the loss.

Travis Taijeron led Binghamton’s attack, going 3-for-5 with two homers and four RBI. Brandon Nimmo added a three-run shot and Jayce Boyd went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while T.J Rivera tied a franchise record with three doubles.

Binghamton struck right away, scoring three two-out runs in the first inning. Rivera knocked home the first run of the series with a double and Boyd followed with a two-run single.

Portland got a run back in the second inning off Mazzoni as David Chester led with a single and moved to third on Michael Almanzar’s double. Keury De La Cruz drove home his 15th run with a ground out.

The Mets would respond in a big way, scoring four runs over the next two innings and knocking Johnson out of the game in the third. The lefty yielded four hits in the third, including a three-run homer to Taijeron ”“ the final batter he would face.

Taijeron hit a solo-homer in the fifth and Nimmo capped off the scoring with a three-run blast off Michael Olmsted in the sixth.

Catcher Mike Brenly went 2-for-4, with 2 RBI and two doubles for the Sea Dogs. Derrik Gibson tripled and delivered a run-scoring double in the ninth.
