BANGKOK, Thailand — Lamyong Darayen Berry, 65, of Cundy’s Harbor, ME; Bangkok, Thailand and Tampa, FL, formerly of Nairobi, Kenya; Athens, Greece; Manama, Bahrain; Seoul, South Korea and Hanoi, Vietnam, died March 23, 2014, at her home in Bangkok, Thailand.

She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Richard P. Berry Jr. Mother of three children and two stepchildren: daughter Kruawan Berry of St. Petersburg, FL; daughter Yongyai Berry of Tampa, FL; son Stephen Berry of Hua Hin, Thailand; stepson Damon Berry of Holliston, MA; stepdaughter Megan Berry of South Orange, NJ, as well as their spouses and numerous and beloved nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

She was born in Bangkok, Thailand on Feb. 18, 1949, the third-oldest of seven children all of whom still reside in Thailand. She married Richard Berry Jr. in 1980 in Bangkok, Thailand and became a U.S. citizen the next year under a process reserved for spouses of diplomats and executives of U.S. multinationals known as “expeditious naturalization” given that her husband was an international staff officer working for Citibank.

A world traveler, she was famous for her original recipes including lobster fried rice and Thai spring rolls, and for delighting the palates of everyone lucky enough to make her acquaintance. Lamyong was a passionate gardener who also loved to walk on the shore of the Maine coast and to teach her children and grandchildren how to skip stones and catch fish.

Although she loved Maine summers, she disliked cold New England winters which were therefore spent in FL and in Thailand with her husband after he retired from Citibank in 2001. While her smile and warm laughter lit up the room, she was also a deeply spiritual person and a devout Buddhist.
