During a Sanford-Springvale Historical Museum program, Arla Patch, the community engagement coordinator for the Maine-Wabanaki REACH coalition will detail her work on Thursday, March 20. Patch has taught art for 42 years and has written two books that combine photography with healing. The coalition, comprised of both native and non-native people, supports the work of the Maine-Wabanaki Child Welfare Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The museum is located at 505 Main St. in Springvale and is handicapped accessible. All are welcome to attend this free program, which commences at 7 p.m.

A Lunch & Learn, “Backyard Birds and Birdhouses,” will be offered at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm Thursday, March 20 from 12-1 p.m. The “bird lady,” June Ficker, will share her vast knowledge of common backyard birds using a collection of study skins. After the program, 10 birdhouses built by local Eagle Scouts will be given away. There is a $2 suggested donation. Wells Reserve is located at 342 Laudholm Farm Road in Wells. The Education Foundation of the Kennebunks and Arundel 2014 Spelling Bee is set for Thursday, March 20 at the Sea Road School at 7 p.m. The community is invited to join in the fun as teams compete for the title of champion speller. Kennebunk Savings has sponsored this year’s event, so it is free to the public, along with the popcorn. Past winners include the Journal Tribune and Federal Jack’s. The Wells-Ogunquit Community School District will host its 10th annual Festival of the Arts at Wells High School on Thursday, March 20 from 5-8:30 p.m. This free, public event will feature a variety of displays of student choral, applied and visual art. Performances will included the Wells Winter Guard teams, and the high school and junior high choruses and bands. Hundreds of pieces of student artwork will be exhibited in the school’s lobby area, cafeteria and adjoining hallways. Also scheduled are teaser performances from the upcoming spring musicals, “Peter Pan and Wendy” and “Cinderella.” For more information, call 646-7011.

Friday, March 21

A haddock dinner will be offered Friday, March 21 from 4-6:30 p.m. at Most Holy Trinity Church, 271 Main St., Saco. Pizza will also be available. All proceeds benefit St. James School.

The Knights of Columbus will host a baked haddock dinner, with a dessert bar, Friday, March 21 from 5-6:30 p.m. at St. Ignatius Parish Hall, Riverside Avenue, Sanford. Proceeds benefit St. Thérèse Parish and Waban Projects, as well as other state and local charities.

Saturday, March 22

A turkey dinner with all the fixin’s will be served up by members of the Acton Shapleigh Lions Club, 4:30-6 p.m. Saturday, March 22 at the Shapleigh Corner Baptist Church. Dessert and drinks are included. The church is handicapped accessible.

Join the after-school bicycle program the Community Bicycle Center for its fifth annual public skating and bikes on ice benefit at the Biddeford Ice Arena, 18 Pomerleau St., on Sunday, March 23, 3:30-5 p.m. The public is invited to skate and stay to participate in or watch the ice bike races. All ticket holders will have the opportunity to test ride custom CBC ice bikes and race in age-appropriate divisions. Personal ice bike designs welcomed and encouraged. There will be free use of the CBC’s ice bike fleet. Rental skates, skate sharpening and concessions are available. This is the last day for public skating at ice arena before it closes for the season.

Author Norman Abelson will speak at Wells Public Library Tuesday, March 25 at 6:15 p.m., looking back over his 83 years as an author and memoir teacher. His fourth book of memoir, still in progress, will zero in on some of the humorous and nostalgic tales he’ll share at the talk. A former Associated Press reporter, Abelson has worked as a journalist, teacher and lecturer. He has been a commentator on several radio and television stations, and was a member of Sargent Shriver’s senior staff. In addition to sharing stories from his childhood and long career, Abelson will interact with the audience, and ask them to share their memories. The Community Supper at Robert’s Maine Grill, Route 1 in Kittery, will benefit the Wells/Ogunquit Senior Center on Tuesday, March 25. The grill chooses nonprofit organizations to receive a percentage of the evening’s sales on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the winter months, on the basis of the organization’s commitment to the community. Dinner hours are 4 p.m. to closing.
