The Sun Journal of Lewiston said it’s placing most of its online content and that of many of its weeklies behind a paywall.
Starting Tuesday, print subscribers continued free access to the website until their subscriptions expire. Then they will be charged an additional fee to read content online.
All visitors are allowed 10 free clicks to premium articles for 30 days before being prompted to pay.
The paywall also covers the Advertiser Democrat, the Bethel Citizen, the Rumford Falls Times, the Livermore Falls Advertiser, the Franklin Journal and the Rangeley Highlander but not The Forecaster — a zoned free weekly.
The Times Record instituted a paywall in August 2011 — the first daily newspaper in the state to do so. Officials at the Bangor Daily News and Portland Press Herald have been preparing paywall plans for months but have yet to implement them.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
