PORTLAND
A 70-year-old man charged with fatally shooting another man during a confrontation at a North Yarmouth beekeeping business is scheduled to make his first court appearance.
Merrill Kimball of Yarmouth is expected to appear in Cumberland County Unified Criminal Court on Thursday on a murder charge. Prosecutors tsay they expect bail conditions to be set.
Authorities say Kimball shot 63-year-old Leon Kelley of Georgetown with a handgun multiple times outside Brown’s Bee Farm on Oct. 6.
Both men are associated with the business through relatives.
Kimball was never arrested, which angered Kelley’s family. Family members say Kimball was not supposed to be on the property and Kelley was trying to make him leave. Kimball’s lawyer says the shooting was a clear case of self-defense.
