FREEPORT
A North Carolina man remains in custody today after he was arrested over the weekend and charged with possession of illegal drugs.
Police received a report of a suspicious car parked on the shoulder of 45 Durham Road, also known as Route 136, about 10 p.m. Sunday, said Freeport police Lt. Susan Nourse. When patrol officers investigated the complaint, they found Brandon Lee Warren, 26, of Charlotte, N.C., inside.
After a routine search, Warren was charged with unlawful possession of hashish and a second count of unlawful possession of a scheduled drug.
Hashish is a more potent form of marijuana. The additional charge stemmed from prescription drugs for which Warren had no prescription, Nourse said.
Warren is from Charlotte, N.C., but the car was reported to have veteran’s registration plates from Maine.
Police did not disclose whether the car was registered in Warren’s name.
He was taken to Cumberland County Jail in Portland and was scheduled for arraignment today. However, Warren was removed from that list this morning, according to jail intake officials. No explanation for the removal immediately was available.
Warren has a brief record in North Carolina, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, including two probation violations and a magistrate’s order — the equivalent of a bench warrant — dating to August and March 2012. He is scheduled to appear in West Bath District Court on Jan. 7.
