To the Editor:
Have we forgotten the last time Byron Watson represented our district on the Brunswick School Board?
As his constituent, a former student of the Brunswick School Department, and a woman, I was offended by Watson’s inappropriate and insulting behavior toward then-House Speaker Hannah Pingree.
Byron Watson is not someone who I believe should be selected to be a role model or decision maker in our community.
The school board is not something that should be subject to the politics that surrounded Watson’s embarrassing exit from his chairmanship just three years ago. Our school district faces serious challenges — developing comprehensive special services, hiring school administrators, and crafting a budget that meets the needs of our kids while taking into account our economic realities. These challenges deserve and require someone who will prioritize the needs of our community over political ambition and public drama.
Byron Watson is not that person.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
