A 28-year-old man with a lengthy criminal history in the Brunswick area was arrested Friday at the Windham Correctional Center on a warrant from Monroe County, Fla.
Charles I. McKenney of Topsham was arrested Friday morning on charges of being a fugitive from justice, according to Capt. Don Goulet of the Cumberland County Sheriff ’s Office.
The warrant originated in Monroe County, Fla., where McKenney was serving two years probation for a May 2012 purse-snatching incident, according to the Florida Department of Corrections. Brunswick police have had “numerous contacts” with McKenney dating back to 2002, Deputy Chief Marc Hagan of the Brunswick Police Department said Wednesday. He was convicted of multiple charges, including failure to stop for an officer and receiving stolen property, among other crimes.
In July 2011, McKenney led police from four agencies on a two-hour foot chase through downtown Brunswick after officers attempted to stop him for failing to appear on a felony theft charge, The Times Record reported at the time.
McKenney remained at Cumberland County Jail on Wednesday. Goulet said it was unclear whether Florida would extradite him.
