The 2014 Ocean Awareness Student Contest is launching.
The contest is an outgrowth of “From the Bow Seat,” a 64-minute documentary about environmental issues adversely affecting the world’s oceans.
The contest and the film provide opportunities for high school teachers and home school instructors to challenge their students to explore real-world threats to marine life.
The contest lasts through June 15, 2014. Results of the 2013 contest will be announced on October 15, 2013.
The focus of this year’s contest is “Plastics Pollution in Ocean.”
Students may submit a five- to eight-page essay, an art project, or five- to 10- minute video highlighting their advocacy campaign. Cash prizes are awarded.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
