JOHN WHITE, deputy assistant secretary of Rural Outreach for the U.S. Department of Education, visited Williams-Cone School in Topsham on Thursday to present a certificate to the school, which was named Tuesday by the department as a National Blue Ribbon School. White, who had a trip planned to Maine to speak at the Rural Community Colleges Conference in Newry on Friday, said he wanted to stop by the school to find out what makes it so special. After a quick tour, he met with students in the music room to make the presentation and to talk about what they like about their school and asked them what they want to do after high school, stressing the importance of education and persistence.
