Andrew Fiori’s foray into the world of hazelnut cultivation is at the nut of “The World is Going Nuts,” the final Friends of Merrymeeting

Bay 2013 “Summer Outside!” event.

Fiori, an organic grower, landscaper and nurseryman from Bowdoinham, will discuss the world of hazelnut cultivation. Participants may bring a picnic and must preregister by calling 666-8419.

Though hazelnuts have been raised and utilized as a food crop for generations, it is only in the past 30 years thatserious attention has been given to their potential as a staple food crop, particularly for the Northeast, Fiori said.

During the session, participants will see a fledgling hazelnut orchard and learn hands-on practices involved in growing them.
