BRUNSWICK Police have identified the driver of the tractor-trailer that overturned Tuesday on U.S. Route 1. Merrill was taken to Mid Coast Hospital where he was treated for what police reports descibed as “minor injuries to the head-area.” He was released later that day. No charges were filed against Merrill. The truck is owned by Hutchins Trucking of South Portland. No damage estimate was available. Approximately 150 feet of guardrail were destroyed in the mishap, and upwards of 25 gallons of diesel fuel spilled. The accident closed the highway’s southbound lanes for several hours and routed traffic onto Bath Road .
Bruce Merrill, 34, of Running Brook Rd., Windham, was travelling south when he fell asleep at the wheel, veered off the road and piled the truck over the guardrail.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
