BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College football team has announced the addition of Eric Westerfield as an assistant coach.
Westerfield will serve as defensive line coach and fills a position left open following the departure of former assistant coach Steve Shukie, who accepted the head football coaching position at Kents Hill School.
Most recently an assistant coach at The Citadel, Westerfield has 17 years of coaching experience, including stops at Harvard, Ohio Northern and Methodist (N.C.). He has specialized in defensive line coaching and recruiting, and has had success at every stop, including the nation’s secondranked defense and an Ivy League Championship at Harvard in 2004 and The Citadel’s first winning season in 15 years in 2007.
Westerfield is a 1992 graduate of Hamilton College, where he was a four-year starter and two-year captain at defensive tackle. He twice earned First Team All- NESCAC honors and was named Co-Defensive Player of the Year by the league in 1991.
He graduated from Hamilton with a degree in government and resides in Brunswick with his wife Faith and daughters Jada, Tara and Kiera.
