A Cleveland native, Vail returned to the scene of an outstanding high school swimming career — more than half a century ago.
In his first competition since “aging up” to the 70-74 age group, Vail won three gold medals, in the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes and the 500 freestyle. His 100 back time of 1:14 and his 200 back time of 2:44 broke National Senior Games records for the 70-74 age group.
Over three days of competition, Vail swam in a total of six events, copping silver medals in the 200 freestyle and 200 individual medley, plus a bronze in the 100 IM.
“The two swimmers who beat me train in 50 meter pools in sunny California,” said Vail. “Maine is not only chillier than California, it’s the only U.S. state without a single 50-meter training facility.”
In addition to setting two new national records, Vail established New England records in both backstroke events and both individual medleys and Maine records in all six events. He trains with Brunswick High School swim coach Dave Bright and the Polar Bear Masters group at Bowdoin College’s Greason Pool.
