The University of Maine System selected Brunswick-based Maine Natural Gas to deliver natural gas to selected facilities at the University of Maine at Augusta campus.
The company recently signed a letter of intent to deliver natural gas to UMA buildings beginning on Oct. 1.
Darrel Quimby, vice president of Maine Natural Gas, said the commitment is “further proof of our commitment to provide affordable natural gas service to businesses and residences in Augusta and on through the Kennebec Valley.”
Quimby said the company has 70 percent of the natural gas pipeline in the ground “and are adding to that daily.”
He said many businesses and residences in the Augusta area will start receiving natural gas service before the end of this year. The Augusta project has created jobs for approximately 200 workers from 15 Maine companies, Quimby said.
