What fan of off-road driving hasn’t dreamt of owning a six-wheel-drive all-terrain vehicle enhanced with huge ground clearance? Just such an explosive cocktail has been offered up by Mercedes-Benz for enthusiasts who are ready to pay the astronomical sum of $525,000 for the G 63 AMG 6×6. You’re probably right if you’re thinking that this German machine was never destined to power through the woods of North America. Rather, it targets wealthy drivers who will be off-roading in the deserts of the Middle East, where petrol and cash abound. Produced in limited quantities (about 30 vehicles per year), the G 63 AMG 6×6 is an extremely luxurious pickup truck with four doors, a bed, and a tailboard. Its body is 5.9 metres long, including an impressive load area of 2.3 metres, and it has a ground clearance of 46 cm (compared with 21 cm for the basic G 4×4). To move this 3.8-tonne six-wheeled monster, drivers employ the services of a 5.5-litre V-8 biturbo engine, which develops a peak output of 544 horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque. The 6×6 technology is powered by a semi-automatic “Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic” gearbox with seven gears. The vehicle also comes equipped with adjustable gas-pressure shock absorbers. On steep terrain, the G 63 AMG 6×6 has the agility of a mountain goat and can tackle sand dunes like a camel! For crossing marshes, it can ford water up to one metre deep. The luxurious cabin exudes the opulence of an S-Class. The four seats and the dashboard are covered in leather and Alcantara, and even the load area is dressed up with a bamboo finish.
