RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — Thousands of Palestinians took to the streets in the West Bank and Gaza today to mark the 65th anniversary of their mass displacement during the war that followed Israel’s founding in 1948.
Every May 15, Palestinians commemorate the “nakba,” or “catastrophe” — the term they use to describe their defeat and displacement in the war that followed the establishment of the state of Israel.
Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled or were driven out during the fighting. The dispute over their fate and that of their descendants, now numbering several million, remains at the core of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
