This letter supports Rep. Mattie Daughtry’s proposal to have the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority board include one representative each named by the Brunswick and Topsham town councils.

This line of representation to include important constituency representatives is critical. This is by no means a criticism of the present MRRA board. Steve Levesque, the board and Steve’s staff have done an outstanding job. However, having a clear link back to elected representatives could very much improve communication and an ability to move quickly on essential development proposals.

Senator (Stan) Gerzofsky’s opposition to this very simple proposal is regrettable. His opposition dates back to the formation of the Brunswick Local Redevelopment Authority. Gerzofsky has consistently blocked, whenever possible, direct representation of elected officials or their designees to any redevelopment process. His disdain for the talent and creative ability of locally elected officials is disappointing for someone who should understand public policy. Maybe his inability to control that process is at the heart of the problem?

In our case, the Brunswick council is a collection of talented, energetic officials concerned about the future of the community. In fairness, they have, from time to time, been slow to move on proposals as they balance many day-to-day issues. Their and the manager’s time are stretched.

The talents of the Brunswick staff are equally impressive. The present Planning, Finance, Public Works or Recreation directors would each be an excellent representative to MRRA, but may also have the same time constraints and occasional conflicts on important issues.

Permitting town councils to have the prerogative to name at least one representative would be an excellent way to close the present communication gap. This individual could report directly to the councils and bring important issues and concerns directly back to the MRRA board. Time saved, communication open and transparent.

We are back on the road to ensuring the responsible and timely redevelopment of the Brunswick base, with everyone at the table.
