The name may sound upscale, but the structure is little more than a 1,468- square-foot boathouse to store the school’s 24 racing hulls, and to provide changing rooms and showers, restrooms, storage lockers, coaches’ offices and a meeting room.
The proposed $185,000 boathouse will go before the Planning Board tonight during its regular meeting at 6:30 p.m.
Bowdoin opened its Coastal Studies Center on Bay View Road in 1998, to provide an on-site lab and marine studies facility.
Built on an 118-acre parcel given to the college by Irma and William Thalheimer in 1981, and with 2.5 miles of intertidal shoreline, the center has both marine and terrestrial labs, as well as a marine- and weather data-collecting buoy moored in Harpswell Sound.
