WINDSOR

Regional School Unit 12 directors approved a withdrawal agreement Thursday with the Wiscasset RSU Withdrawal Committee — an agreement that puts the matter in the state Department of Education’s hands.

Hilary Holm, RSU 12 Board of Directors chairwoman, said this morning there was only one dissenting vote. Board members will sign the agreement and send it to the Wiscasset Committee this week, Holm said. From there, the state will review it, make any adjustments it deems necessary and turn the matter back over to the town.

Wiscasset voters should be able to vote on withdrawing their three schools from RSU 12 by November, according to Jeff Slack, a member of the Withdrawal Committee.

Should Wiscasset residents vote to withdraw, an independent Wiscasset school unit would surface for the 2014-15 school year.

The town of Westport Island also wants to withdraw from RSU 12 and piggy-back on Wiscasset’s effort.

Holm said the RSU 12 board should take action on Westport Island’s bid within a couple of weeks.
