Construction of the new Unitarian Universalist Church building soon will begin at the corner of Pleasant and Middle streets.
First, however, the congregation must say goodbye to an old friend and bless the ground upon which its new home will stand.
A series of ceremonies is scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday, before an official groundbreaking takes place.
“We will have a ceremonial farewell blessing for the old Pennell building, which is slated for immediate demolition,” according to Grace Lewis-McLaren, who is organizing the Sunday events. “Then we’ll turn to the currently vacant ground and do some more blessings.”
Bubbles and banners will be provided. However, for the creation of joyful noise, attendees are asked to bring bells to ring.
The former building was partially destroyed by fire in June 2011. After it was declared too damaged to repair, planning and fundraising began for a new structure.
