Linda Levesque’s Morse High School girls lacrosse team kept coming, battling back from a five-goal deficit and closing to within one goal on three occasions.

The Shipbuilders never did get even, eventually dropping an Eastern Maine Class A contest to Camden Hills, 12- 10, on Thursday at McMann Field.

The loss drops Morse to 1-2, with a visit to Lincoln Academy slated for today at 4 p.m.

“We got to within one several times, but just couldn’t quite get even and didn’t possess the ball,” said the longtime Shipbuilders coach. “If you look at our roster, we are loaded with freshmen and sophomores. This team is wonderful, and we got better in this game.”

Opening ceremony

Levesque led an opening ceremony as the teams took time to reflect on the Patriots Day bombing in Boston during the Boston Marathon. Levesque, who was there that day, announced a hat was going to be passed around, with all proceeds collected going to “The One Fund Boston.” All money raised will be used to help those families most affected that day.

The teams lined up, all players, coaches and officials arm and arm as the National Anthem was played.

“Camden was thrilled to be a part of it, and the game was awesome,” said an emotional Levesque.

Morse jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Sadia Crosby scored her first of five goals.

The Windjammers (3-1) took over from there, firing the next 14 shots and scoring six goals despite stellar play in net by Morse goaltender Cat Sener, who had seven first-half saves.

Goals by Hannah Brownawell, Addie Drinkwater, Kristina Alex, Alice Flint, Lea Smith and Addie Bragg staked Camden to a 6-1 lead with 1:53 remaining until halftime.

Morse found some life in the waning seconds of the frame, getting a goal each from Sophie Sreden and Crosby, assisted by Isabelle Paulus.

“The goals at the end of the first half amped up our energy level,” said Morse senior defensive captain Hannah Rossetti, who had four interceptions.

After Camden took a 7-3 lead on a Bragg goal to open the second half, goals by Crosby, Bronwyn Morissette (assisted by Crosby) and Sreden (Monica Frempong) brought the Shipbuilders to 7- 6 with 18:36 remaining.

The teams traded goals over the next six minutes, with Ruth Nadeau and Sreden (Nadeau) scoring for the Shipbuilders.

Leading 9-8, the Windjammers took advantage of the tiring Shipbuilders with three goals, two off the crosse of Smith, who finished with three goals and an assist.

“Once they got three ahead, we just didn’t have enough time in the end,” said Rosetti. “It would have boosted our energy to tie the game. In the first half, we were doing long passes, and that didn’t work. We moved to shorter passes in the second half, and it got us back into it.”

Crosby finished off her big day with two goals in the final 1:45 of regulation.

Sener had 10 saves, while Camden Hills netminder Cailand Sweeting made three stops. Flint had three goals, Drinkwater two, while Bragg chipped in two goals and an assist, and Brownawell one goal and two helpers.

Sreden picked up three goals and one assist for Morse, while Nadeau had one goal and one helper.
