Jobs for Maine’s Graduates students at Freeport High School and Durham Community School will award $1,000 grants to two local nonprofits serving youth and families.
Freeport High School JMG will contribute $1,000 to the Young Adult Abuse Prevention Program, which works to end dating violence in Cumberland and Sagadahoc counties and will update an important outreach video.
The middle school JMG students at Durham Community School will award $1,000 to ReTreeUs, a Durham-area organization that plants orchards in schools, teaches young people and their families to grow home gardens, and demonstrates environmentally sustainable food systems.
More than 60 JMG school sites and about 3,750 Maine students participate in the Jumpstart Our Youth program each year, teaching middle and high-school students how smart funding and volunteering are critical to the operations of nonprofits that meet community needs.
Funding for the grants is provided by Unity Foundation with partners Maine Community Foundation and UniTel Inc.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
