A Bath man who allegedly stole merchandise Monday from two city businesses was under the influence of two half-containers of prescription drugs, police said Tuesday.
Kurt Johnson, 47, faces two counts of theft and a charge of acquiring drugs by deception.
Police Chief Michael Field said Tuesday that Johnson is being held at Two Bridge Regional Jail in Wiscasset on $1,000 cash bail.
Field said Johnson stole a smartphone from Coastal Glass on State Road, and later tried to steal tools from Rogers Hardware on Congress Avenue.
“They had detained him, which is their right,” Field said. “Sgt. Dan Couture then responded and arrested him.” The arrest came at 1:56 p.m.
Couture then located the smartphone in Johnson’s vehicle, Field said. Less than an hour earlier, Coastal Glass had reported a smartphone theft, Field said.
When he took Johnson to the police station, Couture said he found Johnson in possession of clonazepam and amphetamines. Both bottles, filled earlier in the day, were half-empty, Field said.
