ROCKLAND (AP) — A guard at the Maine State Prison in Warren has been arrested and charged with assaulting an inmate.
Capt. David Cutler of Appleton was charged Wednesday with Class D assault, a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in prison.
Authorities say the 54-yearold Cutler tackled and assaulted a handcuffed inmate on Dec. 24. The inmate, 36-year-old Renardo Williams, is serving a 15-year sentence for drug trafficking.
The inmate, who is black, has met with the NAACP of Portland about the incident. Chapter President Rachel Talbot Ross said Williams did nothing to provoke the alleged assault other than question why black inmates were treated differently in the prison.
