A Sagadahoc County Sheriff ’s deputy was unhurt after a car slid into his police cruiser Saturday.
On a day of numerous snow-related crashes on U.S. Route 1, Deputy Brian Quinn responded to the Witch Spring Hill area at 9:47 p.m. Saturday, where a 2004 Chrysler driven by Katherine Bernier, 21, of Pompano Beach, Fla., had slid on packed snow and ice and struck the guardrail.
Chief Deputy Brett Strout said Quinn was parked behind Bernier’s vehicle with flashing lights on and had got out of his 2008 Ford cruiser when a 2003 Cadillac driven by Richard Polgar, 46, of Bath, slid on ice and snow and struck the rear of the cruiser.
The impact pushed the cruiser into Bernier’s vehicle.
Strout said no one was injured in the crashes.
The cruiser sustained an estimated $1,500 in damage, as did Polgar’s car. Bernier’s vehicle sustained approximately $500 in damage. Bath Police Department responded and handled the crash involving the sheriff ’s cruiser.
Strout said no charges were filed.
Route 1 was shut down for a short time after the car struck the cruiser.
At 9:56 p.m., Deputy Adam Temple responded to a second crash in the same location.
Strout said a 1996 Jeep driven by Delaney Fone, 20, of Woolwich, lost control on ice and snow and struck a guardrail.
A car also slid off the road on Route 1 in West Bath around 9:30 p.m. Saturday but resulted in no damage or injuries.
Between 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. there were two other minor crashes, one on Route 209 in Phippsburg and one on Main Street in Bowdoinham, resulting in no injury; and a report of a crash on Interstate 295 that the sheriff ’s department was unable to locate.
At approximately 10:30 p.m. on Berry’s Mill Road in West Bath, Strout said a sand truck lost control on a sharp corner and tipped over, but was righted and sustained no damage. No one was hurt in that incident.
Sunday morning, deputies were called to three more crashes, none involving injury.
At 7:53 a.m., a car slid into a snow bank and was towed out with no damage in Phippsburg.
Two vehicles side-swiped one another on Sam Day Hill Road in Phippsburg around 9:45 a.m.
And a car struck a guardrail on Route 1 in West Bath shortly before noon Sunday, resulting in minor damage.
