Alex Nichols of Brunswick High School broke the State Class A 400- meter run to highlight the Mid-coast region’s showing in the Indoor Track and Field Championships Monday at the University of Southern Maine.

The Scarborough boys nipped Cheverus 61-57 for the team title, followed by Lewiston (36 points), Edward Little (34) and Brunswick (29), with Mt. Ararat 16th (12). The top seven individual places factor in the scoring.

Nichols took the 400 in a record-setting 49.93. Nichols won the event last year in 51.05 and toppled the old mark of 50.37, set by Gorham’s Cam Stevens in 2009. James Ocicit of Biddeford took second with a record 50.26.

Nichols also won the 200 in 23.11 to beat out Lewiston’s Hassan Mohamed (23.15).

Other Brunswick top efforts came fromthe4x800relayteamofZach Miller, Jason Higginbotham, John Murphy and Walter Martin (sixth, 8:55.22), Jamie Ross in the 800 (third, 1:58.25) and Christopher Tanner in the 800 (seventh, 2:03.67)

Mt. Ararat standouts included Will Hirnak in the 800 (second, 1:57.80-1:57.47 to Cheverus’ Brady Foshay), Ryan Smith in the 400 (seventh, 53.03)andthe4x200relayof Smith, Ty Veno, Ryan Lathrop and Hirnak (seventh, 1:38.04). Andrew McCracken tied the school record in the pole vault (12-00), good enough for sixth.

The girls meet came down to the 4 x 200 with Bangor leading (70.5), just ahead of Thornton Academy (70) and Bonny Eagle (68). When the dust had settled the Rams won 70.5-70 over TA (70), followed by Bonny Eagle (68), Cheverus (41) and Brunswick (36) to round out the top five.

Brunswick highlights included the4x800relayofTiffanyTanner, Sarah Judd, Tessa Cassidy and Anna Cowan taking second (9:56.63) to Bonny Eagle (9:55.95).

Also, Allison Hill was second in the 55 hurdles (8.6), Tanner was sixth in the mile (5:33.50), Judd third in the 400 (1:02.25), Cowan fourth in the400(1:02.26)andthe4x200relay of Haley Murano, Anna Turner, Judd and Hill placed second (1:52.14) to Scarborough (1:50.29).

Class B

The York boys won at Bates College with 76 points, 30 more than runner-up Foxcroft Academy, followed by Waterville (44), Falmouth (42) and Ellsworth (30). Freeport was 13th with 12 points.

Falcon highlights included Abrin Berkemeyer in the mile run (fifth, 4:50.88), and Harrison Stivers in the 400 (second, 52.89) and 800 (seventh, 2:10.15).

Donald Boyer set a state mark in the 55-meter hurdles (7.68), while Denzel Tomaszewski added a state mark in the 55 dash (6.53),

The Waterville girls rolled to the Class B title 112-69.60 over Greely, followed by Traip Academy (38), Lake Region (30) and Ellsworth (27). The Freeport girls took seventh with 18 points.

There were four records broken: Bethanie Brown of Waterville in the mile (5:00.31) and two-mile (10:46.95), Kate Hall of Lake Region in the 200 (25.62, beating out Freeport’s Logan Crane’s mark of 25.94, set in 2004) and Hall in the long jump (17-1.50).

The Freeport highlights included Ciera Wentworth in the mile (fourth, 5:31.97) and 800 (seventh, 2:30.68), Hayley Steckler in the 400 (seventh, 1:05.25), Lexi Dietrich in the 200 (third, 27.50)andthe4x200relayof Meredith Broderick, Kelsey Grant, Steckler and Dietrich (third, 1:54.41).
