BRUNSWICK
Police compelled a man to explain “suspicious material” found in his High Street apartment Thursday.
Deputy Police Chief Marc Hagan said a woman called police at 8:49 p.m., Thursday, to say she found suspicious items belonging to her live-in ex-husband that included laboratory equipment and chemicals.
An officer responded and found laboratory equipment, a dark brown powder and assorted chemicals, Hagan said.
Police contacted the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, who responded and determined the items had a range of uses, including making explosives, drugs, beer or wine.
Police then contacted the man at work, who told police the equipment was for making beer and wine and that the substance they’d found was fermenting alcohol, which police confirmed.
The man was brought by police to his apartment where “we went through everything,” Hagan said. “He had legitimate explanations for everything,” which corresponded with an officer’s list of possible uses for the items.
No charges were filed.
