To the Editor:
We are delighted that the Brunswick Town Council, by a vote of 6-3, approved a resolution backing a constitutional amendment to reverse the Supreme Court’s decision on Citizens United.
We want to publicly thank town councilors Sarah Brayman, Benet Pols and John Richardson for their efforts on behalf of the resolution, and we thank some 1,200 Brunswick residents who signed our petition to the council.
A clarification: There is no group called Brunswick United, as the article in Tuesday’s Times Record claimed. We are members of Occupy Maine Bath/Brunswick region, PeaceWorks, Veterans for Peace and various other groups. We join hundreds of organizations across the country who are working to amend the Constitution.
We are encouraged to see that more and more people in this country are becoming aware that behind every pressing issue, from global hunger to climate change to growing economic inequality in the United States, the problem behind the problem is the overwhelming influence of major corporations on government and policy making.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
