Bath and Brunswick youths will participate in “walking school bus” events, in which a group of children walk to school accompanied by parent volunteers and local community partners instead of taking a bus or being transported by car.
In Brunswick, the event is 8:20 a.m., Friday, Jan. 18, beginning at the Crimmins Field entrance on Columbia Avenue across from Brunswick Junior High School, 65 Columbia Ave. The walk will continue to Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementary School, 44 McKeen St.
In Bath, participants will gather at 8:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Bath Area Family YMCA, 303 Centre St., and walk to Fisher Mitchell School, 597 High St.
The walking school bus is a community event that brings together community members to promote safe walking and biking routes to school, a simple way to increase physical activity, according to a news release.
Brunswick holds a walking school bus every third Friday of the month. Bath holds a walking school bus event every fourth Wednesday of the month.
