Four Regional School Unit 1 schools held “geography bees” as part of a National Geographic program last week.
The winners were Gavin Hanna, a fifth-grader at Fisher Mitchell School in Bath; Annie Clifford, a fifth-grader at West Bath Elementary School; Gaige Kindlimann, a fifth-grader at Phippsburg Elementary School; and Alex Gates, a seventh-grader at Bath Middle School.
Each student was a high scorer in the preliminary rounds at their respective schools and will now take the written qualifying test which will be scored at National Geographic headquarters.
The top 100 scorers from Maine will compete at the state meet in April.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
